Third Grade Arctic Page

People from the Arctic used to make clothes from fur and skin off animals.   Now they can buy different clothing to keep warm.  Some people still get and make their clothes from animals.  Women learned how to sew when they were little and are now experts.  The Inuit women used a wing or leg bone of a bird for a needle and kept it in a tube that they decorated. Usually all the garments were made with caribou.  They like it's lightness and warmth.  The best skins were used during the fall hunt.  It was when the caribou's hair was short.  The woman had to clean the hides that were going to be used. Coats were made out of fur.  Pieces of hide got carefully swen together.  The wet sinews dry and shrink the coats.  A parka is a big winter coat with a furry hood.  They also wear thick pants and also thick furry boots!  After a wash, the Inuits chew on their clothing to make them soft and flexible.
