Roles of Men

Men and women did many different things, but they needed each other.  Men were the hunters and they were the home builders.  An Inuit man got married at an early age, usually as soon as he could hunt food.  It was the man's job to help make the family's boats, sleds, tools, snowshoes, and weapons.  Men were responsible for taking care of the dog sleds, dogs and deciding where and when the family would travel.  In the spring men built sod houses.  They had to make frames of driftwood and whalebone with sod piled on the roof.  Their life was hard.
